What Do You Think? Freedom Is Ours
Nov 062009

I was listening to the song “I Want You To Want Me” by Cheap Trick the other day and began to really think about the lyrics.

I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I’d love you to love me
I’m beggin’ you to beg me

Now girls, think about the crazy guy in high school that had a crush on you and would NOT leave you alone and listen to the song again..

not so sweet anymore now is it?

If you think about all of the songs we listen to and enjoy and you actually listen to the lyrics and analyze what the song is really saying, you’d realize how creepy they can be.

This not only goes for songs. Think about half of the chick flicks we watch. There is always that nerdy guy (well, I like the nerds, so bad example) that follows the main character around trying to “rescue” her from the bad, good-looking guy. As you watch it, you’re hoping she ends up with the “good guy” (the nerd), even if he does happen to be stalking her (how else would he happen to be there every time she needs help?), watching her dress through her bedroom window and begs for her attention even if she has made it clear that she would love for him to fall off the face of the earth.

Don’t you love how movies and songs can make the creepiest things seem ok, and even endearing sometimes?

Krista, once again your personal insight has shed new light on a topic that is usually viewed much differently. You have uncovered values- one of the moves we are practicing in our English writing class- by looking beyond an accepted cultural norm, and asking why it is, in fact, that we not only condone, but also encourage such seemingly ‘ok’ behavior. At what point did society capitalize on unhealthy obsessions, and how does this affect how men view women? Thank you Krista for giving us something to think about. :)

When you think about it that I way, Krista, you are right! I guess we find it SO ENDEARING in the movies and the songs is because we know the ulterior motive and intentions of the one being ‘creepy’. To think about it, IT IS creepy having the nerd there all the time, wishing that he would disappear to the next 10 counties (or parishes ;) wherever you are from) because you don’t know what is going on inside his (or hers) head. Good thing movies are ‘make believe’ because if I saw something like that happening to my friend, I’d probably find the closest plastic baseball bat!! :) Thanks for sharing!!!! God Bless ~ Jess :)
