Krista, I was listening to my cheesy mixture of ballads in the car, and somewhere in between such agonizing motifs as “Baby Come Back” by Player and “How am I Supposed to Live Without You?” by the man himself (yes, I’m talking about Michael Bolton), “You’ll be in my Heart” by Phil Collins made it’s way through my mediocre stereo system. I blared it, naturally, because nobody- and I mean nobody- appreciates a good, rip-your-heart-out-of-your-chest-and-stomp-on-it song more than I do.
Naturally, I thought of you, best friend, and how we spent Thanksgiving together last year. It was our “home away from home” holiday dinner, and I’ll never forget it. I’m not sure that I’ve ever had a Thanksgiving as memorable as that one. We all contributed to the dinner, and went around the table before we ate, each of us saying what we were most thankful for. After you and I had a tearful back and forth, emotional discussion of which one of us was more thankful for the other one (”No, I’m more thankful for you!- No- I am!”), your husband interrupted us with “Well… I’m thankful for Krista’s body.” I don’t think I’ve ever been more thankful for laughter as much as I was right then.
Sometimes, friend, I wish I could go back to that moment in time, and press the pause button for just a few minutes. We looked ridiculous! I mean, the only time someone should be that silly and uninhibited is when one is extremely intoxicated… and, yet, we somehow managed to recreate that feeling of wonderful overindulgence over everything from comments about the food (Susan’s dressing!) to laughing over everything… or nothing at all.
Krista, this Thanksgiving, I am so thankful for your contagious laughter, your enduring friendship, and all the memories we’ve shared together. I wouldn’t trade them for anything… not even Susan’s dressing.
~Love, Katie~
P.S. You’ll be in my heart.
