Upwork publishes a report every few months that shows the quickest-growing tech skills for freelancers who work online. In the United States, about 35 percent of the working population does some sort of freelance work. Americans may do freelance work to support themselves completely or to earn extra income aside from a main job. On a weekly basis, those American workers earn a total of $1 billion in freelance work. Upwork CEO Stephane Kasriel said that many of the high-demand skills of today were nonexistent just a few years ago. Although companies can find workers with the necessary skills to complete projects that require these new talents, the statistic shows just how fast technology is evolving in business. Freelancers who use Upwork can find permanent or temporary work. According to Stephane, freelancing is becoming a skills-first market, and people who want to get the best gigs must have relevant knowledge or experience. With the speed of innovation growth, there will be even more opportunities in the future.

Upwork’s Latest Skills Report

Upwork’s report said that the current top 20 skills grew by at least 115 percent within the last 12 months. The demand for those skills grew much faster at a rate of 400 percent during the same period. A note on the report said that 75 percent of the 20 skills were new. Dropbox API was the skill that was in highest demand. It was followed by equity search, molecular biology, iPhone UI design and Salesforce. These were some key insights from the report.

Many large and small businesses are looking for professionals to design apps, develop security programs and create administrative solutions. According to the IPO for Dropbox, the company had more than 500,000 developers registered under its name. It also made the high demand for Drobox API clear with its reported number of 50 billion monthly API calls.

In the coming years, about 30 percent of spending from major IT companies will take place on cloud platforms. Kubernetes is one of the most popular companies that offers cloud design tools, and Google has a wide range of offerings. Kubernetes was one of the top 20 specific skill sets on Upwork’s latest list. Also, the Google App Engine API is a useful program to learn.
